Nicole's Graphing Post

1. Use your notes to list the different types of graphs. Please list the advantages and disadvantages of each graph.

Bar Graph :

Advantage : The advantage of the bar graph is that you can easily compare the different categories.
Disadvantage : The disadvantage of a bar graph is that you can't really tell what the exact number is.

Double Bar Graph :

Advantage : The advantage of a double bar graph is that you can compare sets of data across categories.
Disadvantage : The disadvantage is that you are not particularly sure on what the exact number is for the category .

Pictograph:

Advantage : The advantage of a pictograph you can get the exact number for every category.
Disadvantage : You can only make a pictograph if all your data a even.

Circle Graph :

Advantage : The advantage of a circle graph is the you can easily compare the data to the whole percent.
Disadvantage : The disadvantage of a circle graph is that you have to work hard to get the percent for the category.

Line Graph :

Advantage : The advantage of a line is that you can easily see your progress over time.
Disadvantage : The disadvantage is the you can't really tell what the exact number is for the category.

2. How can graphs be misleading. Show 3 ways.

Example 1 : You can break the y-axis, the bigger the break the more you misrepresent your graph.

Example 2 : You can distort the value. You distort the value on the pictograph when you make one of the pictures look more bigger then the other when they are supposedly almost the same value.

Example 3 : You can also make a bar bigger, change the color of one bar and make a bar 3D. When you do these things it makes the viewer think the bar you change is more important when it is not.

2a) The following chart shows Pizza Sub Sales over a month. What 2 graphs would show the information accurately ?

The line and bar graph would show the data more accurately.

2b) If you were selling Pizza Subs would you continue? How does your graph explain your answer.

Yes, I would continue because each week the amount of people buying the Pizza Subs keep on getting higher. And I would use the line graph to represent this data because it would show the positive amount of people buying the Pizza Subs over time.

4. Below you see 2 different examples of graphs showing healthy choices sold at the canteen. If you had to convince Mrs Mota that we should continue selling healthy choices which graph would you choose?

I would choose the line graph because it shows the sales of the healthy food going higher and higher.

4a) Change each graph so that your information looks even MORE impressive. You may not change the data just the graphs.
