Isabel's Textbook Scribe Post ( 4,7,10) and Phytagorean Relationship

4. Estimate the square root of each number, to one decimal place. Check it with a calculator.

72= The estimated square root that I got for 72 is approximately 8.4 and here's how I got it...

STEPS:

1st step: draw/make a number line

2nd step: find out what are the 2 square root numbers that are close to 72 which are 64 and 81 *how I got 64? 8x8 How I got 81? 9x9*

3rd step: write number 64 on the left side, below it write 8, write number 81 on the right side and below it write 9

4th step: estimate a number that is 8 point something but can't be over 9 so I chose 8.4

5th step: double check your answer with a calculator, when I multiplied 8.4 by 8.4 I got 70.56 which us pretty close to 72 but you can also use 8.5

103= The estimated square root that I got for 103 is approximately 10.1 and here's how I got it...
STEPS:

1st step: draw/make a number line

2nd step: find out what are the 2 square root numbers that are close to 102 which are 100 and 121 *how I got 100? 10x10 How I got 121? 11x11*

3rd step: write number 100 on the left side, below it write 10, write number 121 on the right side and below it write 11

4th step: estimate a number that is 10 point something but can't be over 11 so I chose 10.1

5th step: double check your answer with a calculator, when I multiplied 10.1 by 10.1 I got 102.1 which us pretty close to 102

55= The estimated square root that I got for 55 is approximately 7.3 and here's how I got it...
STEPS:

1st step: draw/make a number line

2nd step: find out what are the 2 square root numbers that are close to 55 which are 49 and 64 *how I got 49? 7x7 How I got 64? 8x8*

3rd step: write number 49 on the left side, below it write 7, write number 64 on the right side and below it write 8

4th step: estimate a number that is 7 point something but can't be over 8 so I chose 7.3

5th step: double check your answer with a calculator, when I multiplied 7.3 by 7.3 I got 53.29 which us pretty close to 55 but you can also use 7.4

7. Identify a whole number with a square root between 11 and 12.

The whole number(s) that I identified between 11 ( 121)and 12 (144) are :

How I got 121? 11x11 and how I got 144? 12x12

MIDDLE NUMBERS ..... between 121 and 144 are

122,123,124,125,126,127,128,129,130,131,13 2,133,134,135,136,137,138,139,140,141,142 and 143 and here's how I got it...

10. Kai uses entire can of paint on a square backdrop for the school play. The label in the can states that one can covers 27 squared meters of wall surface. Estimate the backdrop's side length, to one decimal place.

The estimated backdrop's side length is 5.2 meters and here's how I got it...

1st step: draw/make a number line

2nd step: find out what are the 2 square root numbers that are close to 27 which are 25 and 36 *how I got 25? 5x5 How I got 36? 6x6*

3rd step: write number 25 on the left side, below it write 5 , write number 36 on the right side and below it write 6

4th step: estimate a number that is 5 point something but can't be over 6 so I chose 5.2

Phytagorean Relationship

1. Answer in a short paragraph and with diagrams:

Explain the Phytagorean Relationship a2+b2=c2

The Phytagorean Relationship is if you add the 2 legs ( a2 and b2) you'll get the hypotenuse (c2). But in order for you to know that your solution might be correct is when the hypotenuse is the biggest number in all of the 3 important parts. The hypotenuse is the longest because it is diagonal/ slanted.

2. Solve for the missing side length

3. Is this a right triangle? Prove it!

It is NOT a right triangle and here's how I got my answer

Isabel's Textbook Scribe Post ( 3, 9, 13 )

*Guys! Sorry that this post is late but I hope that this scribe will help you :)*

5. Determine the percent of each number. Give your answer to the nearest hundredth:

  • A. 2/5% of 325 is 1.3 but if you estimate it you will get 1. This is how I got the answer:
Divide 100/5 to get 20
Divide 325/5 to get 65
Multiply 20x2 to get 40
Multiply 65x2 to get 130
Divide 40/100 to get 0.4
Divide 130/100 to get 1.3

Another one is by finding the decimal:

Divide 2/5% to get 0.4%. Make 0.4 out of 100. Divide 0.4 and 100 by 100 and you'll get 0.004/1. The last part is where you multiply 0.004 x 325 to get 1.3.

  • B. 15 1/4% of 950 is 144.875 but if you estimate it you will get 144.88. This is how I got the answer:
Divide 100/10 to get 10
Divide 950/10 to get 95
Divide 10/2 to get 5
Divide 95/2 to get 47.5
Divide 5/5 to get 1
Divide 47.5/5 to get 9.5
Divide 1/4 to get 0.25
Divide 9.5/4 to get 144.875

Another way is by finding the decimal:

Divide 15 1/4% and you'll get 15.25. Make 15.25 out if 100. Divide 15.25 and 100 by 100 and you'll get 0.1525/1. The last part is where you have to multiply 0.1525 x 950 to get 144.875.

  • C. 175% of $125.50 is $219.65 but if you estimate it you will get $219.70. This is how I got my answer:
Divide 100/2 to get 50
Divide $125.50/2 to get $62.75
Divide 50/2 to get 25
Divide $62.75/2 to get 31.375

Another way is by finding the answer by decimal:

Divide 175 and 100 by 100 and you'll get 1.75/1. You now multiply 1.75 x $125.50 to get $219.625

9. The highest point in Canada is Mount Logan, which is in Yukon Territory. Mount Logan is 159% as high as the highest point in Alberta, Mount Columbia. The elevation of Mount Columbia is 3747 m. What is the elevation of Mount Logan?

Divide 159 and 100 by 100 and you'll get 1.59/1. You now multiply 1.59 x 3747 and you'll get 5957.73 m.

13. Suppose a real estate agent receives 5% commission on the first $200 000 of a house's selling price, and 6% on the remaining amount.
  • A. What does commission mean?
When I googled the meaning of commission it says: a fee charged by an agent for his/her service in facilitating a transaction, such as buying or selling of securities or real estate. So then, it is a fee that house realtor gets when he/she sold a house.
  • B. If a house sells for $345 000, how much commission does the real estate agent make on sale of the house?
How did I get 145 000? I subtract 345 000 to 200 000 and got 145 000.
To get 6% of the 145 000 you have to first- Divide 100/10 to get 10. Divide the 10/10 to get 1. Multiply the 1x6 to get 6. Divide 145 000/10 to get 14 500. Divide 14 500/10 to get 1450. Multiply 1450x6 to get 8700.

To get 5% from the 200 000 you have to first- Divide 100/10 to get 10. Divide 10/2 to get 5. Divide 200 000/10 to get 20 000. Divide 20 000/2 to get 10 000.

You then have to add 8700+10 000 which is equal to 18 700.

Isabel's Pay It Forward

Part 1: What is "Pay it Forward"?
"Pay it Forward" is a brilliant movie that we watched a few weeks ago. It is about a 7th grade student who had a project on social studies. He had an idea that if he help 3 other people then those 3 people would help another people which the total gets higher and higher every time they help another people. His idea was great but his classmates didn't like it. He tried to use his teacher, his mom and his friend but didn't worked out. What he wanted to do was a random act of kindness. He also did an interview before he died.

Part 2:
My act of kindness was donating some of my clothe to salvation army. Although they were already used, I still think that I could help people to cover up especially at this cold weather.
I choose this activity because personally I think that although my clothes were already used, I can still help other people by them buying it at a low price especially people who doesn't have a lot of money or people who likes to to buy inexpensive clothes. I also think that by donating it I would not have as much clothes as I used to have that's just sit there and let it to be worned-out in this way I would be able to get rid of it and also help other people.
I helped many people by donating clothes especially people who doesn't have a lot of money or people who likes to to buy inexpensive clothes.
After school today, my dad and my sister went with me in Salvation Army to donate clothes. Before I went in I took few pictures to post in this blog. I went in and place the paper bag with few clothes inside to the big plastic bin where the people who donates place their donation(s). After that my dad bought a couple of tools and after that we went home.
I did my act of kindness just today: November 15,2011 at 4:00 pm in Salvation Army (Thrift Store).

Part3:
My act of kindness went very very good. Just what I expected to be. I was expecting to help people to buy my donations for a very good deal. At first, I thought that my donations was a only a few clothes that could only help a few people but I realized that although it was a very little pieces of clothing I'm sure that it will help a lot of people because everything counts.
I felt inspired that at this young age I could donate clothing for other people. I felt relieved that everything went well just what I expected to happen. I was also scared that it might only help small amount of people. And lastly, I felt blessed to have this things, I was blessed to buy new clothes every week or 2, I was blessed because I didn't have to feel what its like to only have one pair of clothing like the children from other poor countries and lastly I was blessed because I am free to do all this good things to help other people.
When the time that I told my dad that I WANT to donate used clothes to Salvation Army, he said yes immediately. I think that he was happy that I do this good things to other people. My sister helped me to take pictures although it was freezing outside she went with me to take pictures and I think that she was happy because we both can do it. Although the personnels in the store didn't saw me place my donations, I think that they are very happy that another batch of clothes came in.
I told my dad that I was doing it to pay forward. Helping other people was a big thing and I also told my mom that it was a project to make a difference. But I didn't got to talk to the staffs because they were few costumers that are in line so I don't want to bother them.
Although I didn't got to talk to them about the project, I still think that they will be happy to hear the news about the project and how to make a difference.
I didn't got to talk to them because they were busy and there are a few costumers in line waiting so I didn't want to bother them.

Part4:
I think that the idea of "Paying it Forward" is important because it shows other people that everyone of us can make a difference. Although what you did was a small thing that can help a small amount of people it doesn't matter as long as you are doing the right thing.
I think that my act of kindness made a difference because I took actions to help other people.

Isabel's Graphing Post

1. Different types of graphs:
  • Bar Graph
Advantages-The advantage of the Bar Graph is comparing a set of data across categories.
Disadvantages-The disadvantage of the Bar Graph is that you can't always have a specific interval for each set of data and categories.

  • Double Bar Graph
Advantages-The advantage of a Double Bar Graph is comparing two sets of data across categories.
Disadvantages-The disadvantage of a Double Bar Graph is that you can't always have the same interval for each set of data. It is also not good if you are trying to compare only one set of data across categories.

  • Line Graph
advantages-The advantage of a Line Graph is showing changes in a data over time.
disadvantages-The disadvantage of a Line Graph is that you have to pick intervals for the whole graph and it is also not good for comparing different categories in a set of data.

  • Circle Graph
advantages-Best for comparing categories to the whole using percents. Sum of percents in a circle graph is 100%.
disadvantages-The disadvantage of a Circle Graph is that it is hard to convert the whole numbers into percentages, because to be able to convert whole numbers you have to multiply a number by 100.

  • Pictograph
advantages-Best for comparing data that can be easily counted and represented using symbols.
disadvantages-The disadvantage of a Pictograph is that the numbers that represents a set of picture should be the same. Another picture can't have a different number to represent the visual.

2. A graph can be misleading by:
  • Distort the Scale-Creating a bad interval. It also allows you to have a smaller interval but bigger range.
  • Distort the Visuals-Make a set of data or a row of data, much bigger than the other ones.
  • Distort the Size of a Bar- Create one of your bar wider or if you are using a grid paper add more squares.

3. A.
I would use a Bar graph and a Line Graph to show information accurately.
B. Yes I would continue selling Pizza Subs because on the Line graph, it shows the changes overtime on the data which means it is showing that the sales get more higher and higher every time.

4.A. For me to able to convince Mrs. Mota that we should continue selling healthy choice, I would use the line graph because it clearly shows that every month the sale kept on getting higher and higher which means that many students like the choices.
B. For the LINE GRAPH I would change the intervals to much smaller number like start at 2 so then it would be more higher on the graph instead of it so low.
For the PICTOGRAPH I would change the number that represents each heart to much smaller number like 2 so then it would be more longer but it is very important to make sure that all hearts are the same in size.

Isabel's Proportion Post

Task 1: DEFINE
  • RATIO- a comparison of quantities that have the same units.
Example: What is the ratio of the 5 gold and 4 blue ornaments?

Answer: 4:5 or four to five

  • RATE- a comparison of two quantities measured in different units.
Example: What is the rate of typing 660 words in 10 minutes?

Answer: 66 words/minute

  • PROPORTION- an equation which states that two ratios (FRACTIONS) are equal.
Example: What is the proportion of moving 216 students in 4 buses?

Answer: 54 students/bus

Task 2:
  • 5 hours to travel 360 miles is about _____ mph.
Answer: 72 miles/hour

  • As a playgroup worker, if I increase the amount of apple juice I am serving at a playgroup from 25 ml to 100 ml, how much should I increase the orange juice to, to keep the quantities in the same proportion? The orange juice is 50 ml to start with.
Answer: 50 ml/200 ml

Task 3:
  • What are the three ways you can prove that 3/4 and 12/16 are equal
Answer:

Task 4:

Task 5:

  • Does it seem fair?
Answer: I don't think it's not fair at all.

  • With what you know about proportion look and read what is in the image above. Does it seem fair? Why had you made this choice?
Answer: I don't it's not fair at all. Because I personally think that the judge shouldn't allow Paul R. Allen to be in prison for 40 months because he doesn't deserve it, he deserves more years and meanwhile on the other hand, here's a guy name Roy Brown who robbed a bank and steal $100 just because he was hungry and no where to stay. I had made this choice because I put my self in their situation and then think what it's like to live like Roy Brown And Paul R. Allen.
