Scribe 2: 4, 9, 10, 15b), 16b), 18, 21 /Pythagorean

Definition - The square root of a number can be thought as the side length of a square.
  • Square roots are the inverse of squaring a number
Explanation

a)
b)
a)
b)

Answer
  • As I found the Prime Factors of 32 which is 16 and 2.
  • I found the Prime Factors 16 which is 8 and 2.
  • Then I found the Prime Factors of 8 which is 4 and 2.
  • After I boxed in the Line of Prime Factorization after I made a basket using those number to make more sense
  • So as you can see its a perfect square.

Answer:
  • First I just had to find the Prime Factor of 25 which would be 5 and 5.
  • So then when I multiply 5 by itself, it would make a Perfect Square that would equal 25
  • After I would multiply the sides to get the area
  • The square of the number would be as the area of the square, which is 5
  • So then the square root of 25 = 5

Answer
  • Well what I did first is that a made an imaginary mat that had 14m of side length.
  • Then I did the area formula of a square which would be:
A = SxS
A = 14x14
A= 196
So the area would be 196m²
  • So thats the answer of the area of the floor mat in square metres.

Answers:
  • 21)a. Well how I showed my work for this answer is I used the area formula.
  • How it worked is I would use length x width as my area formula
  • The formula would look like:
A = l x w
A = 14 x 4
A = 56
The area would be 56m²
  • So then that would be the area of the patio and how to find out the answer.
  • 21)b. Well what I did here I would have to find out 2 different sets of numbers to have the same area as 56m²
  • So what I used here would be the same area formula length x width
  • As my two different sets of numbers I used 28 as my length and 2 as my width.
  • So the area formula for this patio would be:
A = l x w
A = 28 x 2
A = 56
The area is 56m²

21)c. Well in my opinion it is NOT because it you use a square as a patio 56 wont be able to be a perfect square number.

We Day 2011

How do I even begin talking about this amazing experience at "We Day." I don't even know where to start with this adventure on November 23rd. Where only 16, 000 students around Manitoba became inspirations for today and be the next generation of leaders tomorrow. From the 16,000 students who attended We Day, only 30 students including myself got chosen not just to have fun but to become inspired young adults to be different makers for tomorrow, and to our future. With the inspiration of our speakers Mia Farrow, Chief Shawn Atleo, Hannah Taylor, Rick Hansen, Spencer West, Paul Martin, Michel Chickwanine, Sharon Conway, Dennis Whiteburg and Marc and Craig Kielburger, myself and my other fellow classmates learned many things. The biggest change that I learned today was there isn't a I wont, I can't or a never but there is a 'WE can' and a 'WE are.' With a WE can, we could help stop child labour, global droughts, poverty, global warming, cleaner water, human rights, and have plenty more education for the children around the world. I have this two speakers in mind who really inspired me to be a better leader for my generation and become a difference maker in the world, one of them is Spencer West. Why? Well through his disability of not having two feet and not having a normal life, he made himself tougher and tougher every single day to make a difference in the world. He inspired me that no matter who you are, you can make a difference and become the new leaders of tomorrow. When he explained what "we" meant to him, he gave me this positive spark that really popped out to myself is when he said that "everyday we have a choice over our actions and our thoughts, whether it be over our words, interactions, spending, travel, or even the books and media we choose to consume and that these choices will affect not only our lives, but the lives of those people around us." I really became a better person and became inspired with those words, for me even though there small words, they have a strong impact into them. For me he may have a disability, but he has a big impact in the world to inspire others to become difference makers for our future and convince other young adults to become a new change in the world, to have a better global community. When Spencer traveled to Kenya to build a school and he understood that with over 6 billion people in the world every single person has a different story. One day he was talking to 2-3 young beautiful children and there was this one girl who held his hand and told him that these kind of small things could happen to white people too because of this young child Spencer was inspired to show the world that WE CAN make a difference for someone else's life. The other speaker who inspired me to take action to the world is Michel Chickwanine. Today millions of young adults/children are not having their right to have a education, health care, security and their expectation to have a good life like other children in the world. But when these young children face the war, poverty and exploitation, they can't have the right to speak out whats against there justice. There expected to be silenced. So now on November 30, WE grade 8's are expected to convince the other grade 8's to take action and stay silenced for the children who can't have the right to speak for there justice. So what WE can do is to convince other people to join in the other 100,000 young participants who will not speak for 24 hours, to show the world that we cant ignore these children who cant have there right to speak. On what Michel 's case, he used big cards to tell us his story on how he spoke to the world to grab attention for what WE should take action too. When Michel was a young child refugee he was forced to leave his home. He was forced to be a child soldier who was forced to do things he cant refuse. So then he was forced to kill his bestfriend Kevin. With the ending of Craig and Kielburger's powerful words that all the speakers made me inspire myself too is that our generation is hope for a bright future. I mean like entering the stadium seeing many young adults wanting to become difference makers in the world, that became inspired that not only WE CAN make a difference but WE ARE also making a difference for someone else and to our world. Now that I know to myself that I have to believe that I can make a difference in the world. Now I have to push myself to make one, three or nine people's life come true and have them deserve and experience the amazing life we have in our world. All WE can do is step up and make a change that WE ARE and WE CAN see in our world. That's what I'm going to prove to make a difference for someone else.

Pictures from WE DAY - - credits to Mr. Harbeck

Thank you Mrs. Wilson, Mrs. Lee, Mr. Potter, Mr. Harbeck and the other staff of Sargent Park for giving the 30 grade eight students and I to this opportunity to attend WE DAY. Without all of you WE won't have this amazing experience to be inspired with all of these amazing speakers to teach us how to "make a difference in the world" Thank You. (=

Abby's Pay it Forward

Part 1.

Pay it Forward was an inspirational movie the grade eight's had to watch. Pay it forward was about a boy named Trevor. He and his classmates was assigned a history project to make a change in the world and show action. Trevor's idea was too help three people, and to convince another three people would have to pass on and help another group of three people. Instead of having Trevor get something in return he would have the replay back of 'Pay It Forward.' By having to Pay it Forward he made a whole lot difference, just by having a small idea like this would turn it into a bigger idea to inspire other people to make a difference for someone else. Pay it Forward would be a type of movie that friends, families and teachers would watch because on that spec of a small idea from Trevor, would turn into a bigger project so that other people can become inspire to make a difference for someone else.

Part 2.

I did two things for my act of kindness.

1. My first act of kindness was I went too Winnipeg Harvest with Aicelle and Mary. I choose this activity because having to see some families not have meals 3 times a day inspired me to help. Having to hear children just sleep through there hunger and not have a meal for a day, makes me think that I'm such a lucky person to get fed 3 times a day with the food that I get fed. Having myself think that whatever I eat for breakfast, lunch or dinner that someone more important would need this kind of food to eat everyday. I helped Winnipeg Harvest to pack up the goods for the families that wouldn't have something to eat everyday. What I did at the harvest was Aicelle, Mary and I went to a station that applies four goods for families in need, we would have to put pasta, soup, some canned meat and another important good in a plastic bag to have ready for the families who cant afford the food. Another station we went to was sorting the potatoes to the boxes and getting them ready for the families so if there were any broken potatoes we would have to put them in a separate pile to give to the farmers. We did this act of kindness on Saturday, November 12 at around 9:00 to 12:00.

2. My second act of kindness was I fundraised money for the 'Ladybug Foundation' with Aicelle and Mary. I chose this activity because while the grade eight's were talking about what they were going to do for Pay it Forward not that much students had a plan on fundraising money to the foundations here in Winnipeg. So I planned to help the Ladybug Foundation which our very own Winnipeger Hannah Taylor founded. Reading her website on why she would like to help, what she did to make a difference for someone else, inspired me a lot! With the saying that a penny couldn't help because its just a cent, and it wont help a homeless person for shelter or food. Well in my saying, 'a cent is better than nothing.' Also seeing children in the Philippines brought up to my mind when some families would just sleep in the sidewalk for the night with a piece of cardboard and trying to sleep with nothing in there stomach and would try to pick out food in the garbage and just sleep it out just made myself think that a cent could already help someone out with some food and warm shelter. With the money Aicelle, Mary and I fundraised we already helped out the Ladybug Foundation to provide the shelter and food for the families in need. How we fundraised the money is that we bought cookies to bake, maynards to sell and the supplies we needed to make it more interesting for the families to buy our items. What we did is we went to my uncle's apartment to bake the cookies and get set up to sell them and sold the cookies around the rooms in the apartment for $1.50. We provided a big cookie and a chocolate chip cookie, or three cookies in the box we sold them for and made the amount at around $30-35 dollars buy selling the cookies. I also sold Maynard candy at school for $1.00 to help fundraise for the Ladybug Foundation and got the amount of $30.00! So all together we collected the amount of around $60-65 dollars! We did this act of kindness at Saturday, November 12 after we went to harvest and Sunday, November 13.

Part 3.

Both of my act of kindness went really well. Well the leaders of Winnipeg Harvest said when we were in the 'spirit room' was that was the biggest group to go for orientation and I was really happy to hear that. Also when I gave the donations to Mrs. Wilson to give to the office I was really proud of us for giving food and shelter for the families in need for the Ladybug Foundation to pass on. I was really proud of myself, for making a difference for someone else to experience a beautiful life like what I have today. Just to except a smile from them can make my day already, and I'm proud that I already did. Well when Mrs. Wilson mentioned that I was fundraising money for the Ladybug Foundation made my heart whelmed because I know that for a person like me wouldn't get to fund raise such money like that, but without the grade eight teachers inspiration I wouldn't have a chance to make a difference for so many people in need here in the city. I didn't get a chance to say 'Pay it Forward' because I know that many people would have the inspiration to help the people in need, not just by saying it, but also by 'showing it.'

Part 4.

The idea "Pay if Forward" is important because one spec of kindness from two or three people can already make a difference for one person or more. For a small act of kindness from you can already inspire other people in the word by not saying their going to do it, but showing that everyone can do it! In my opinion I know that my act of kindness made a difference. Why? Well, my act of kindness has some fund raising to do so without the people buying our item, we couldn't make a difference in the world, but showing that they care by buying our item, we aren't the only people who made a difference but also the people who helped us make a difference for the people in need. So without their help, we wouldn't be able to go this far in our project and spread our message 'Pay it Forward.'

Abby's Percent Scribepost

Math homework book pg. 37

I shaded in my hundred grids like that is because the grid is a hundred grid, and for each percent it would by represented as:

3 colored boxes
46 colored boxes
97 colored boxes

a)
  • my fraction is 1/4 because there's one rectangle shaded in and there are four rectangles
  • the decimal is 0.25 because each rectangle is worth 0.25 also known as 25%
  • the percent is 25% because there are only one rectangle shaded in
b)
  • the fraction is 3/8 because there are three rectangles shaded in and there are eight rectangles
  • the decimal is 0.375 because when you divide the numerator and the denominator together you would get the answer of 0.375
  • the percent is 37.5% because when you change the 3/8 to an equivalent fraction to 300/800 and divide both of those numbers you would get the answer of 37.5%
c)
  • the fraction is 1/2 because theres one half of a circle shaded in and the other half of the circle isnt
  • the decimal is 0.50 because the circle has a whole of one and half on the circle's whole would be 0.50
  • the percent is 50% because half of one hundred is 50
d)
  • the fraction is 4/5 because there are five pieces of pizza and there are four pieces shaded in
  • the decimal is 0.80 because each piece is worth twenty and there are four pieces shaded in so you would get 0.80
  • the percent is 80% because as I said for the decimal each piece is worth twenty, so when you add the other three slices you would have 80% of the pizza shaded in
Math homework book pg. 38

1. To represent a percent greater that 100% you would - - shade more than one hundred grid.
2. To represent a fractional percent greater that 1% you would -- shade squares from a hundred grid to show the whole number and part of one square to show the fraction.
3. To represent a whole number you would - - shade squared on a grid of 100 squares called a hundred grid.
4. To represent a fractional percent between 0% and 1% you would - - shade part of one square on a hundred grid

Question number 5.

a) There are 144 boxes shaded so the percent would be 144%
b) There are 2/3 of a tile shaded so the percent would be 0.7%
c) There are 88 tiles shaded and 8 smaller tiles shaded on 1 box so the percent would be 88.8%

MATH QUESTION.

22% of 80=
20% = 16% =
1% =0.8
1% =0.8
1% =0.8 = 1.6
16+ 1.6= 17.6

Abby's Graphing Post

1. Use your notes to list the different types of graphs. Please list the advantages and disadvantages of each graph.

Bar Graphs - are best comparing data across categories
Advantage - you can easily compare it to different categories
Disadvantage - you cant really see the exact numbers in the bar graph

Double Bar Graphs - are best for comparing two sets of data across categories
Advantage - you can compare the two sets of data at the same time
Disadvantage - you could get confused by the two sets of data that are together even though they are black and white

Circle Graphs - are best for comparing categories to the whole using percents. The sum of the percents in a circle graph is 100%
Advantage - there good for comparing percentages in a whole
Disadvantage - you have to work to find the percent of the category

Line Graphs - are best for showing changes in data over time
Advantage - you could easily show the progress you have over time
Disadvantage - the exact amount isn't clear

Pictographs - are best for comparing data that can be easily counted and represented using symbols
Advantage - you kno
w the exact number
Disadvantage - all your data needs to be even

2. How can graphs be misleading. Show 3 ways.

- Distorting the size of the bars (making one larger than the other)

- Distortion in the scale (break down the y-axis)

- Distortion the bars in the graph (change one bar to a different color)

3. a) The following chart shows Pizza Sub Sales over a month. What 2 graphs would show the information accurately?

I would use a bar graph and a line graph to represent this information accurately.

3. b) If you were selling Pizza Subs would you continue? How does your graph explain your answer.

I would continue to sell the Pizza Subs because it shows that when I look at both graphs its showing that the sales every week were increasing. That is the trend would be going up.

4. Below you see 2 different examples of graphs showing healthy choices sold at the canteen. If you had to convince Mrs. Mota that we should continue selling healthy choices which graph would you choose?

If I would convince Mrs. Mota to continue selling healthy food choices I would use the line graph because it shows that the trend of the sales of healthy food items were increasing and or decreasing in the line graph.

4. a) Change each graph so that your information looks even MORE impressive. You may not change the data just the graphs.

Here are some links that could help you (=

Abby's Proportion Post

Ratio - A relationship between two quantities, that have the same unit.
Ex: There are 16 ducks and 9 geese in a certain park. Express the ratio of ducks to geese in three ratios. 16:9, 16/9, 16 to 9
Rate - Two quantities measured in different units.
Ex: $0.56 per 50 grams or $0.56/50 grams.
Proportion - An equation which states that two ratios (fractions) are equal.

1) 5 hours to travel 360 is about 72 mph.
2) As a playground worker, if I increase the amount of apple juice I am serving at the playground from 25ml to 100 ml, how much should I increase the orange juice, to keep the quantities in the same proportion? The orange juice is 50 ml to start with. The orange juice would be 200 ml.

What are three ways you can prove that equivalent ration statements are true.
3/4 = 12/16 or 4/9 or 4/9 = 16/32

1)
multiply top left to bottom right
multiply bottom left to top right

2)
divide top left by bottom left
divide top right by bottom right

3)
multiply top left with a number to equal top right
multiply bottom left with a number to equal bottom right

1) Does this seem fair?
No it is not far for this man.
2) With what you know about proportion look and read what is in the image above. Does it seem just and fair? Why have you made this choice?
It would still be unfair for the man because stealing $100 in the bank and getting into prison for 15 years would be unfair for a man stealing $3 billion dollars and getting out of prison in 3.5 years. That would really be unfair for the poor man stealing 100 dollars.
3) What would you have done if you were the judge?
I would have the man who stole $3 billion dollars be in prison for 15 years and have the man stealing the $100 dollars be in prison for 2 months.
