Daphne's scribe post (Jan 9, 2012)

Math notes for Today, Jan 9, 2012! :)

PRIME NUMBERS; have only two factors, 1, and the number itself.

*multiply\times can also be called " groups of "

PYTHAGOREAN RELATIONSHIP

1.) Explain the Pythagorean Relationship:

The phythagorean relationship is the formula that we use to find a side length of a right triangle. (a²+b²=c²)
The variable a² and b² stands for the legs of a right triangle, and the variable c² stands for the hypotenuse which is the longest side of a right triangle.

2.) Solve the missing side length:

3.) Is this a right triangle? prove it!!!

daphne's (textbook) scribepost

(textbook pages 128-129)

4.)
a.) this diagram represents 112% (in total, there are 112 squares shaded)
b.) this diagram represents 0.2% (there are 2 squares shaded in one square that is divided by 10, therefore it is 0.2% or 2/10 ->two tenths)
c.) this diagram represents 85.33% or 85 and 1/3 (85 squares are shaded AND one square that is divided by three has 2 squares shaded [1/3] therefore it is 85.33%)

5.)
a.) this diagram represents 0.3% or 1/3 (one square is divided by 10 and 3 are shaded, therefore it is 0.3%)
b.) this diagram represents 125.5% or 125 1/2 (125 squares are shaded and one square divided by 2, and 1/2 is shaded)
c.) this diagram represents 282% (there are 2 hundred grids, and one grid with 82 squares shaded, therefore this diagram represents 282%)

8.)
How many hundred grids are needed to show each of the following percents.
a.) 300% - you will need 3 grids (one grid contains one hundred, 100x3=300)
b.) 466% - you will need 5 grids (one grid contains one hundred, 100x4=400.. but you still have "66" left, so you will need 5 grids)
c.) 1200% - you will need 12 grids (one grid contains one hundred, 100x12=1200)

11.)
The land area of Alberta is about 113%
of the land area of Saskatchewan. Use
hundred grids to show how the land area
of Alberta compares with the land area of
Saskatchewan.
Alberta would have 113% and Saskatchewan would have 100%

Daphne's Pay It Forward

1.) WHAT IS PAY IT FORWARD?

Pay It forward is a movie that we have watched. It is about a kid having an assignment from his teacher to create and make a positive difference in the community and the world where he lives in. Trevor (the kid from the movie) then thinks of some postive act of kindness that he could do. He thought of doing positive kindness for three people. Those three people will each then do positive kindness for three people and so on. The point is, if you have done something positive for someone, (without asking anything back) and tell them whatever they have recieved and want to give back.. instead of giving it back, we want them to "PAY-IT-FORWARD".

2.) WHAT WAS YOUR PAY-IT-FORWARD ACT OF KINDESS? Our PAY-IT-FORWARD act of kindness is raking a small part of the school grounds, it isn't much, but hopefully it will at least make a little difference for our school. WHY DID WE CHOSE THIS ACTIVITY? We have chosen to do this activity because we wanted our school to look nice and clean in a small way by raking the leaves that are on the school grounds. WHO DID WE HELP? My friends and I have helped the school. WHAT DID WE DO? Together, with my friends, MarielleM. and KimG. we have raked some part of the school grounds. WHEN DID WE DO OUR ACT OF KINDNESS? We have done our act of Kindness on Friday, November 4, 2011.

3.) HOW DID YOUR ACT OF KINDNESS GO? It was good. We also had fun. WHAT HAPPENED? We have raked for approximately three hours, but the cold weather was bothering us so much, that we wanted to stop, but we still continued. HOW DID YOU FEEL? It feels good especially that you knew that you have helped someone without anything back but for them to "PAY IT FORWARD". HOW DID THE PERSON/PEOPLE REACT? There were some teachers who saw us and they have asked us why we were doing it and we have told them that we are doing ths project called "PAY IT FORWARD". DID YOU ASK THE PERSON TO PAY IT FORWARD? No. We have forgotten to ask the person to pay it forward, but we have told them that we are doing this project without asking for anything back. But if I ever get a chance to do it again, I will actually tell the person to pay it forward.

4.)The idea of PAY IT FORWARD is very important because it could help a lot of people who needs it. Anyone can particpipate by PAYING IT FORWARD. I think that our act of kindess had made at least a small difference in our community, and our school.

Daphne's Graping Post

1.)DIFFERENT TYPES OF GRAPHS:

Bar Graph: Bar Graphs are best for comparing data across categories.
Advantage: It is best for comparing data.
Disadvantage: Itcould be easily misinterpreted.
Double Bar Graph: Double Bar graphs are best for comparing two sets of data across categories.
Advantage: Best for comparing two sets of data.
Disadvantage: Could be easily misinterpreted.
Circle Graph: Circle graphs are best for comparing categories to the whole using percents. The sum of the percents in a circle graph is 100%.
Advantage: Compares data to the whole using percents.
Disadvantage: It's not accurate.
Line Graph: Line graphs are best for showing changes in data over time.
Advantage: Best for showing changes in data overtime.
Disadvantages: It doesn't show the data clearly.
Pictograph: Pictograph are best for comparing data that can be easily counted and represented using symbols.
Advantage: Uses symbols to show data.
Disavantage: Could be easily misinterpreted.

2.) HOW GRAPHS CAN BE MISLEADING:

Misleading features include:

-BREAK IN THE Y-AXIS
-MAKE ONE BAR LARGER THAN THE OTHER
-COLORING ONE BAR DIFFENT THAN OTHERS

2/A.)
I would use a line graph, and a bar graph to show this set of data.
2/B.)
Yes. I would continue selling Pizza Subs. Because on what the data shows, the amount of sales are getting higher, which means you could earn more money if you continue selling.

4.)
I would chose the Line graph, because you could actually see the trend going higher and higher.

4/A.)
Line graph. I would change the amount of intervals so that it would look like the trend has more, but actually still have the same data, but different amount of intervals.
Pictograph. I would change the amount of one heart represents. So you could clearly see the amount and value of what one heart represents.

Daphne's Proportion post

TASK I - DEFINE

Ratio:A comparison of quantities that have the same units.

Rate: A comparison of two quantities measured in different units.

Proportion: An equation which states that two ratios (fractions) are equal.

TASK II

1.) 5 hours to travel 360 miles is about 72 mph.

2.) As a playgroup worker, if I increase the amount of apple juice I am serving at a playgroup from 25ml to 100ml, how much should I increase the orange juice to, to keep the quantities in the same proportion? The orange juice is 50ml to start.

TASK III

What are the three ways you can prove that equivalent ratio statements are true?

3/4 =12/16 or 4/9=16/32

TASK IV

PROPORTION VIDEO!

TASK V

*I was having trouble adding the image from the Sargent Park Math Zone. So here is the LINK to the image*

1.) Do you think this is fair? No, I dont think this is fair.

2.)With what you know about proportion, look and read what is in the image above. Does it seem just fair? Why have you made this choice? I don't think that this is fair. I have made this choice because it doesn't make sense for someone(Roy Brown) who robbed the bank for money and now has to spend 15 years in jail, and he only took $100 because he was homeless and hungry. He even realized that what he did was wrong, so he surrendered himself to the police. On the other hand, someone (Paul R. Allen) who was sent to jail for only 3 years for $3 billion scheme that officials called one of the biggest corporate frauds? Its not fair at all.

3.)What would you have done if you were the judge?
If I were the jude, I would make matters fair. I would give (Roy Brown) about 1 year in jail, and (Paul R. Allen) about 15 years in jail. I think that would make it fair depending on how much money they took. The judge in this generation is oviously not fair, why would he give a man who only took $100 because he needed it, 15 years in jail? and why would he give a man who is a fraud for a $3 billion scheme only 3 years?
