Nicole's Proportion Post

Task 1

Definition:

Ratio - A ratio is used when you compare two quantities together .

Example :

Make a part-to-part ratio with this diagram :

Part- to- Part Ratio : 3 : 6

3 is for all the white squares and the 6 is for all the black squares.

Rate- A comparison of two quantities measured in different units .

Example :

There are 3 cans of Beefanonni the large one is 1.2 kg or 1200 g and is priced at $ 6.00 , the medium sizes on is 500g and priced at $ 3.00 and the smallest on is 200 g and priced at $ 2.00 . Which can would be the best buy ?

You should buy the largest can because it cost less per gram.

Proportion - A proportion is a equation that states 2 ratios (fractions) are equal .

Example :

1 pineapple costs $ 2.50 How much would 5 pineapples cost ?

5 Pineapples would cost $ 12.50

Task 2

#1 : 5 hours to travel 360 miles is about ____ mph

If you drove for 1 hour you would have traveled 72 miles.

#2 : As a playgroup worker, if I increase the amount of apple juice I am serving at the playgroup 25 ml too 100 ml, how much should I increase the orange juice to, to keep the quantities in the same proportion? The orange juice is 50 ml to start with.

If you increase the amount of apple juice you are serving to 100ml then you would have to serve 200ml of orange juice to the kids in the playgroup.

Task 3

What are three ways you can prove that equivalent ratio statements are true ?

4/9 = 16/32

This ratio statement is not equivalent.

Task 4

Task 5

1. Does this seem fair ? In my opinion this is not fair at all.

2. With what you know about proportion look and read what is in the image above. Does it seem just and fair ? Why have you made this choice ? Of course it is not fair. Paul R. Allen stole 3 billion dollars and got sentenced to go to jail for only 40 months which is approximately 3 years, like really what is a guy going to with all that money ? And a home-less man named Roy Brown only stole a 100 dollar bill when the banker was giving him like stacks of money that he could have stole too and got sentenced to 15 years in jail when he finally gave him self up to the police because he felt that it wasn't the right thing to do. Ad I find is really outrageous that Roy has to spend 5 times more time in jail then Paul when Roy only stole 100 dollars that he actually needed.

3. What would you have done if you were the judge ? If I were the judge I would have sentence Paul to go to jail for at least for 30 years or so, because of all the money he stole. And I would have sentenced Roy to maybe a few months in jail because he didn't steal that much money when he could have and he did give him self up to the police after realize he did wrong.
