ashton's porportion post

Task 1 please define these words below
ratio: The relation between two magnitudes with respect to the number of times the first contains the second. E.G. 5 to 2 , mathematically written as 5:2
rate: A certain quantity or payment with reference to some basis of calculation.
proportion: Comparative relation between things or magnitudes as to size, quantity, or number.
task 2 answer these question using proportion statements
5hours to drive 360 km is about 72 mph. Below is my work

As a group worker, if i add the amount of apple juice i am serving at the playgroup 25 ml to 100 ml how much should i increase the orange juice to, keep the quantities in the same proportion? the orange juice is 50 ml to start with. Below is my work.

Task 3 What are three ways that you can prove that these equivalent ratio statement are true 3/4 =12/16 or 4/9 =16/32
Task 4 find a video about using proportion and embed it in your post.please make sure you select the small size. If you want to see my video please scroll down to the bottom of the page !
Task 5 Do you find this fair?
Yes and no, I do find this fair because if he had his hand up his T-shirt and there is evidence he could have got convicted of robbery with a weapon. At the same time I don't find this fair because the ex-mortgage guy took allot and only got 3 years.

This is the video I found for task 4

shari's porportion post

Ratio- A comparison of quantities that have the same units.
Rate-A comparison of two quantities measured in different units.
Proportion- An equation which states that two ratios are equal.

1: Homeless mangets 15 years for stealing 100 dollars.
the judge sentenced him 25 years for stealing $100.

  • Do you think its far?

Answer: NO its not fair because 15 years for stealing 100 dollars that does not make any sense at all.

2:With what you know about proportion look and read what is in the image above. Does it seem just and fair? Why have you made this choice?

Answer: No not fair at all 15 years for 100 dollars mayde he was hungry and he didn't had no where to go.

3: What would you have done if you were the judge?

Answer: I would give him 5 months and put him in a house care for people.

Isabel's Proportion Post

Task 1: DEFINE
  • RATIO- a comparison of quantities that have the same units.
Example: What is the ratio of the 5 gold and 4 blue ornaments?

Answer: 4:5 or four to five

  • RATE- a comparison of two quantities measured in different units.
Example: What is the rate of typing 660 words in 10 minutes?

Answer: 66 words/minute

  • PROPORTION- an equation which states that two ratios (FRACTIONS) are equal.
Example: What is the proportion of moving 216 students in 4 buses?

Answer: 54 students/bus

Task 2:
  • 5 hours to travel 360 miles is about _____ mph.
Answer: 72 miles/hour

  • As a playgroup worker, if I increase the amount of apple juice I am serving at a playgroup from 25 ml to 100 ml, how much should I increase the orange juice to, to keep the quantities in the same proportion? The orange juice is 50 ml to start with.
Answer: 50 ml/200 ml

Task 3:
  • What are the three ways you can prove that 3/4 and 12/16 are equal
Answer:

Task 4:

Task 5:

  • Does it seem fair?
Answer: I don't think it's not fair at all.

  • With what you know about proportion look and read what is in the image above. Does it seem fair? Why had you made this choice?
Answer: I don't it's not fair at all. Because I personally think that the judge shouldn't allow Paul R. Allen to be in prison for 40 months because he doesn't deserve it, he deserves more years and meanwhile on the other hand, here's a guy name Roy Brown who robbed a bank and steal $100 just because he was hungry and no where to stay. I had made this choice because I put my self in their situation and then think what it's like to live like Roy Brown And Paul R. Allen.

Michael's Proportion Post

1st Task: Define

Proportion: A proportion is a equation that states 2 ratios (fractions) are equal.

Example: 1 pound of dog food cost $2.50. How much would 7 pounds of dog food cost?
7 pounds of dog food would cost $17.50

Ratio: A ratio is used when you compare two quantities together

Example:

The ratio of grey blocks to white blocks
is 3 : 5

Rate: A comparison of two quantities measured in different units.

Example: If a large can of tomato sauce cost $6.00 and had 500ml , a medium one cost $3.50 had 300ml , and a small one costed $2.00 that had 200ml . Which can of tomato sauce is the best deal?

Here you can see that the small can of tomato sauce is the best deal because, 100ml of small tomato sauce cost 1 dollar
85 ml of medium tomato sauce cost 1 dollar
83 ml of large tomato sauce cost 1 dollar

Task 2:

1st: 5 hours to travel 360 miles per hour is about ___mph.

5 hours to travel 360 miles is about 72 mph.

2nd: As a playgroup worker, if I increase the amount of apple juice I am serving at the playgroup 25 ml too 100 ml, how much should I increase the orange juice to, to keep the quantities in the same proportion? The orange juice is 50 ml to start with

Task 3:
What are the three ways you can prove that equivalent ratio statements are true?
3/4=12/16

Task 4:

Task 5 :

We are starting to engage in discussions about social justice. What do you think about this image below. Use the link to copy it into your post. Then answer the questions

1. Does this seem fair?

No, this does not seem fair.

2. With what you know about proportion look and read what is in the image above. Does it seem just and fair ? Why have you made this choice ?

Any sane person would automatically know this was not fair. I decided this because Allen stole a billion dollars and got approximately 3 years. While a homeless man, by the name of, Roy was sentenced to 15 years in jail, for stealing $100.. which he returned.

3. What would you have done if you were the judge ?

If I were the judge I would have sentenced Allan at least 2x longer than Roy's original sentence. And I would have sentenced, Roy to a maximum of 1 year because he was honest and turned himself in and pleaded guilty.

Priya's Proportion Post

Task 1:
What is a ratio? A ratio is the relation between two similar magnitudes with respect to the number of times the first contains the second: the ratio of 5 to 2, written as 5:2 or 5/2.
What is a rate? A rate is a comparison of two quantities measured in different units. $1.69 per 100 grams or $1.69/100g is a rate for purchasing bulk food. 72 beats per min is a heart rate.
What is a proportion? A porportion is an equation which states that two ratios (fractions) are equal.
Task 2:
1) 5 hours to travel 360 miles is about _____ mph.
If you drive 1 hour, it will take 72 miles long.
2) As a playgroup worker, if I increase the amount of apple juice I am serving at the playgroup from 25 ml to 100 ml, how much should I increase the orange juice to, to keep the quantities in the same proportion? The orange juice is 50 ml to start with.
If you increase the amount of apple juice yoiu are serving to 100 ml, then you would have to serve 200 mlof orange juice to the playgroup kids.
Task 3: What are the three ways you can prove
that equivalent ratio statements are true?
This ratio statement is not equivalent.
Task 4:

Task 5:

1) Does this seem fair? Yes it is fair.

2) With what you know about proportion look and read what is in the image above. Does it seem just and fair? Why have you made this choice? I think its fair because this homeless man did something he shouldn't have done. If he was really poor, he can go to a shelter or one of those places where homeless people get free food. I think 15 years of jail is good for him.

3) If I was the judge, I would of probably have kept it to 15 years.

Jason's proportion post

Task 1

Ratio-a ratio is used when you compare two quantities with each other
Example
Part to part ratio
4:2
4 is the red squares and 2 is the blue squares

Rate- a comparison of two quantities measured in different units
Example
If 5 bananas cost $1. Whats the cost of 15 bananas?
15 bananas cost $3.
Proportion-an equation which states that two ratios (fractions) are equal
Example
This is a proportion statement.

Task 2

1.5 hours to travel 360 miles is about __ mph
5 hours to travel 360 miles is about 75 mph

2. As a playgroup worker, if i increase the amount of apple juice i am serving at the playgroup from 25 ml to 100 ml, how much should I increase the orange juice to, to keep the quantities in the same proportion? the orange juice is 50 ml to start with.

Task 3

3/4 = 12/16

Task 4

Sorry i forgot how to upload the video so hear is the link

Task 5

1 Do you think its fair?
No i don't think its fair

2 With what you know about proportion look and read what is in the image above. Does it seem just and fair? Why have you made this choice?
The other guy had to spend 15 years in prison for stealing only $100.

3 What would you have done if you where the judge?
I would sentence him to a moth in prison.

Nathan's Proportion Post

proportion- an equation which states that two ratios (fractions) are equal

rate- a comparison of two quantities measured in different units

55 mph

ratio- a comparison of quantities that have the same units

16 : 9, 16 / 9, 16 to 9

Task 2:

1) 5 hours to travel 360 miles is about _____mph

÷ 5
miles 360 72
_____ ______ = _______
hours 5 1
÷ 5

5 hours to travel 360 miles is about 72 mph.

2) As a playgroup worker, if I increase the amount of apple juice I am serving at the playgroup from 25 ml to 100 ml, how much should I increase the the orange juice to, to keep the quantities in the same proportion? The orange juice is 50 ml to start with.

apple 25 ml 100 ml
_______ _______ = _________

hours 50 ml 200 ml

The playgroup worker should increase the orange juice quantity to 200ml to keep it in proportion.

Task 3

The three ways you can prove that equivalent ratio statements are true are...

Criss-cross:
Horizontal:

Vertical:

Task 4

Video:

Task 5

1. No, this is not fair

x 30 000 000
2. $ 100 $ 3 000 000 000
______ = _______________

15 years 450 000 000 years
x 30 000 000

If the judge used proportional reasoning, then the CEO should get 450 million years in prison to be fair. That's why I don't think this is fair.

3. If I was the judge, I would have switched it around. I would have given the CEO 15 years and the homeless man 3 years.

Marielle's Proportion Post

Task 1:

Ratio - comparison between two different of things.

Rate - A comparison of twoo quantities measured in different units. it can be expressed as a fraction, but cannot be express as a percent. Unit rate is a rate in which the second term is one

Proportion - A relationship that says that two ratios or rates are equal.

Task 2:

1. 5 hours to travel 360 miles is about 72mph. Here's how I did it. . . .

2. As a playgroup worker, if I increase the amount of apple juice I am serving at the playgroup from 25 ml to 100 ml, how much should I increase the the orange juice to, to keep the quantities in the same proportion? The orange juice is 50 ml to start with.

Task 3:
What are the three ways you can prove that equivalent ratio statements are true?
3/4 = 12/16

Task 4:

Task 5:

  • Does this seem fair?

  •  15 years in prison for stealing 100 dollars is not fair.
  • With what you know about proportion look and read what is in the image above. Does it seem just and fair? Why have you made this choice?

  • This is NOT fair because Paul R. Allen stole 3 billion dollars and he only have to stay in prison for 40 months/ 3years. However, a homeless man, Ray Brown only stole 100 dollars and he have to stay in jail for 15 YEARS!! Even though he felt guilty.
  • What would you have done if you were the judge?

  • If I were the judge I would give Paul Allen a 15 years contract (or even more than 15 years!) and Roy Brown should only have a year or half in prison.

    3/4 =12/16 or 4/9=16/32

    TASK IV

    PROPORTION VIDEO!

    TASK V

*I was having trouble adding the image from the Sargent Park Math Zone. So here is the LINK to the image*

1.) Do you think this is fair? No, I dont think this is fair.

2.)With what you know about proportion, look and read what is in the image above. Does it seem just fair? Why have you made this choice? I don't think that this is fair. I have made this choice because it doesn't make sense for someone(Roy Brown) who robbed the bank for money and now has to spend 15 years in jail, and he only took $100 because he was homeless and hungry. He even realized that what he did was wrong, so he surrendered himself to the police. On the other hand, someone (Paul R. Allen) who was sent to jail for only 3 years for $3 billion scheme that officials called one of the biggest corporate frauds? Its not fair at all.

3.)What would you have done if you were the judge?
If I were the jude, I would make matters fair. I would give (Roy Brown) about 1 year in jail, and (Paul R. Allen) about 15 years in jail. I think that would make it fair depending on how much money they took. The judge in this generation is oviously not fair, why would he give a man who only took $100 because he needed it, 15 years in jail? and why would he give a man who is a fraud for a $3 billion scheme only 3 years?
