Kim's Proportion Post

Task 1)
Ratio: A comparison of quantities that have the same units.
Rate: A comparison of two quantities measured in different units.
Proportion: An equation which states that two ratios (fractions) are equal.

Example:

For the diagram shown above, write each ratio. Express answer in three different ways.
Words: thee balls compared to six
Ratio Notation: 3:6
Fractions: 3/6

Task 2)

5 hours to travel 360 miles is about _____mph

hours 5 (÷5) 1
-------- ---- = ---- > 72miles / hour
miles 360 (÷5) 72
  1. As a playgroup worker, if I increasethe amount of apple juice I am serving at the playgroup from 25 ml to 100 ml, how much should I increase the the orange juice to, to keep the quantities in the same proportion? The orange juice is 50 ml to start with.

apple juice 25 (x4) 100
------------- ------- = ------- > You should increase the 50 to 200ml orange
orange juice 50 (x4) 200 juice by multiplying by 4.

3) Task 3)
What are the three ways you can prove that ratio statements are true?
3/4 = 12/16 or 4/9 = 16/32

Task 5)

  1. Does this seem fair? NO, I really don't think this is fair.
  2. With what you know about proportion look and read what is in the image above. Does it seem just and fair? Why have you made this choice?
I don't think this is fair because a CEO that made a 3 billion dollar fraud is only sentenced to 40 months in prison. It isn't even enough because if it was actually "the biggest corporate fraud in U.S. history", he should get more than 3 years. While on the other hand, there is a homeless man who actually took himself in because he just stole 100 dollars so he could survive, and yet the judge sentenced him to 15 years of prison! This isn't fair because society is still so wrecked. It's still so racist, and it's sickening to know that people can let these things happen.

3.
What would you have done if you were the judge?
If I was the judge, I wouldn't think about skin colour. I would actually put myself in the characters position and think to myself what price that person should really pay.
