Samantha's Proportion Post

Task One
Ratio- shows the comparison of two or more value that has the same units
The image beside shows an example of a ratio, it can be shown three ways:
3/4, 3:4, three compared to four

Rate- a comparison of two quantities in different units
For example 3 apples cost $1.50, how much would 1 cost?
The answer would be $0.50, the rate would be 1/$0.50
Proportion- an equation which states that two ratios are equal
An example would be, Trevor runs 25km in 10 minutes, how long would it take for 100km?

1) 5 hours to travel 360 miles is about 72 mph
hours 5 (÷5) 1
miles 360 (÷5) 72

2) As a playgroup worker, if I increase the amount of apple juice I am serving at the playgroup from 25 ml to 100 ml, how much should I increase the the orange juice to, to keep the quantities in the same proportion? The orange juice is 50 ml to start with.
apple juice 25ml (x4) 100ml The worker needs to increase 50ml to 200ml.
orange juice 50ml (x4) 200ml

What are the three ways you can prove that equivalent ratio statements are true?
3/4 = 12/16 The first way is horizontal, the next is crisscross and last is vertical.

No, this doesn't see fair at all.

2) With what you know about proportion look and read what is in the image above. Does it seem just and fair? Why have you made this choice?
I don't think this is fair because if you were to compare the amount of money in a proportion statement, the CEO has technically stole way more. Since the amount stolen by the CEO is very high, his jail time should be high as well, but this man didn't steal as much but he got put in jail for an unreasonable amount of time. Just because this man was homeless and a different race does not mean he should get a longer amount of time in jail, it should matter on how much they stole!

3) What would you have done if you were the judge?
If I were to be the judge of this case, I would have sentenced the opposite way or maybe even worst for the CEO. The man in the image should have only gotten the 40 months in jail and the CEO should have gotten the 15 years in jail.

    I think this is not fair because the CEO took $3 billion and only in prison for 40 months which is 3 years and 4 months, and the homeless person took only $100 and get a 15 year sentence.

    3. What would you have done if you were the judge?

    I would sentence more than 15 years and the homeless man for about 2 weeks

4/9 and 16/32 arent equal.

No its not fair because if you try to do the math and change the 100 to 3 billion and change the years to make it the same as the old CEO he would end up way longer than him he would end up in jail for more than 45 billion years. while the old CEO only has to do 4 years.

What would you have done if you were the judge?

If I was the judge I would of probably been more fair to him and I would of only let him stay there for like 3 months I know its not really the best choice in his case but Im just trying to be realistic.

- The image above is not fair because the man gets 15 years in prison for stealing $100 and the other gets less than him besides the fact that his case involved a lot more money.

3) What would you have done if you were the judge?
- If I was the judge, I would give the other man a lot more time in prison due to the fact that his case involved more money and his case sounds more serious than the man who stold the $100.

- No because the guy steal $3 billion and he only has to do 40- month sentence and the other guys stole $100 dollars and goes to jail for 15 years. So it doesn't really make since he took 100 and his going to spend 15 years in jail but the other guy stole 3 billion and just have to do 40 month sentence so it doesn't really make sense .

- If I were the judge I would do it another way like the guy who stole the 3 billion goes to jail for 15 years and the other guy who stole 100 dollars would do 40- month sentence.

No it still doesn't still seem fair. For someone to steal $3 000 000 000 and get prison for 3.5 years is ridiculous, also for someone to steal $100 and go to prison for 15 years is more ridiculous. Most Unfair Thing To Do!!!
3) What would you have done if you were the judge?
If I was judge I would give him about a week of Community service.
or
I would let him in jail for 1 month.
